Mr. Ben Rutherford

Mr. Rutherford has been an integral part of of the Veritas team since its inception, serving first as our Curriculum Director.

Ben Rutherford earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from West Virginia University with a minor in Philosophy.  While at WVU he served as Student Research Team Leader for the Chemistry and Biochemistry Departments.  He then received a Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland in 1995.

St. John’s College is a renowned Great Books College.  The Liberal Arts program at St. John’s College explores the persisting questions of human existence by studying classic works of the western tradition, organized into five semester-long thematic segments: Philosophy and Theology, Politics and Society, Literature, Mathematics and Natural Science, and History.

Mr. Rutherford taught high school Chemistry in Maryland before returning to the Mid-Ohio Valley as an adjunct professor in Chemistry and Philosophy at Marietta College.  In 2006, he joined the full-time faculty at Washington State Community College teaching Philosophy, Chemistry, and Biology.  He has also taught Anatomy, Physiology, Ethics, and Critical Reasoning.  In 2008, he was selected as Chair of Liberal Arts and was subsequently appointed to the position of Dean of Arts and Sciences for several years.

Veritas Academy is fortunate to have as our headmaster a gentleman of integrity, character, and intellect who is himself the beneficiary of a classical education.  “Upon meeting the founding families of Veritas Classical Academy, I seized the opportunity to serve in the development of their classical school.  I believe in the importance of preparing our children to embark on the unending pursuit of learning,” said Mr. Rutherford.

Mr. Rutherford lives in Parkersburg with his wife, Mindy, and daughter, Sarah.
